BRAIN FIELD, 2007
BRAIN FIELD, a lithograph printed with linseed oil, presents the brain as a landscape, a kind of cartographer’s map that roots our seat of consciousness in the earth; the wave motion forming the brain recalls the annular rings of a tree or even footprints pressed into the ground. Gormley’s choice of linseed oil, too, works to connect the brain with the natural world, suggesting that both are in states of continual growth and expansion: maps with no end in sight.
